11 May 1940 CENSUS Moses Alvin Clark

Maine, Franklin, Wilton, Walker Hill Road.

In 1940, Moses was 59. He valued his farm at $3,500. He stated that he had completed 8 grades of school. The family had lived in the “same house” in 1935. Clara, 57, also stated that she had completed 8 grades of school, and that she was working on her own account as a housekeeper.

Their daughter, Janette was 25 and married to Theredon Lidstone, 20. They were living with Moses and May that year. Theredon stated that he had completed 8 grades of school, and was working as a laborer for wages. He worked 52 weeks in 1939, and earned $480. He stated that in 1935 he had lived in the “same place” (presumably Wilton). Janette had completed 2 year of college, and was now caring for their newborn son, David E.

Their son, Raymond L. Clark was living nearby. He was 35, owned his farm valued at $1,000 [I believe this was the property later occupied by the Lidstone family]. Raymond had completed 1 year of college. His wife, Dorothy, 31, had completed 4 years of high school. Their children were:  Nelson Barrie, 5; the twins, Evelyn Rae and Edna Mae, 3; and Sandra J., 1. All the children were born in Maine.

[Interesting side note:  Dorothy Lloyd Clark was born in Maine, but her father was an engineer born in England. He is believed to have worked on the Brooklyn Bridge construction, as well as other bridges in North and South America.]

Myra E. Hibbard Clark, 65, remained on the farm she had shared with her husband, David Lewis (who died in 1939). She had completed 2 years of college, and was apparently retired now from teaching. She worked on her own account, managing her farm. She had a lodger, Jesse Bartlett, 25, who was a college student at that time from Milo, Piscataquis, Maine.  The census does not indicate any kinship between them.
