2 Jun 1880 CENSUS: Haskell Family
Maine, Androscoggin, East Livermore.
According to the 1880 Census, Rose M. Haskell, 1, was living with her parents , Charles T. Haskell, 35, and Josie F., 29, at the farm of her paternal grandparents, (Charles M. (59) & Abigail (58) Haskell) in East Livermore, Maine. Rose’s brothers and sisters in 1880 were: Ada May, 7; Llewellyn F., 4, disabled with scrofula; Abby Ora., 2; and Tayler, 3 months. All members of the Haskell family were born in Maine.
Rose Haskell’s mother is actually Lucy F. Tufts Haskell (not Josie). This is the only census (or official document) which lists her as “Josie.” This was probably a case of the census taker mishearing the name.
Rose Haskell’s brother, Llewellyn, was disabled with scrofula. Scrofula is an infection of the lymph nodes in the neck which causes large abscesses. Treatment today involves either antibiotics (in cases where inflammation is caused by tubercular bacteria) or surgery (in non-tubercular cases). In the past, scrofula was treated with herbal poultices.
