6 May 1930 CENSUS Moses Alvin Clark

Maine, Franklin, Wilton Town, Walker Hill Road.

By 1930, Moses was 49, owned his farm without mortgage, and owned a thriving dairy farm operation. Clara May, 47, worked as a housekeeper, probably keeping the books for the business as well as raising and canning the family’s food. The census indicates that she had no occupation [Hah! Obviously, the census taker never had a garden or canned vegetables]. They had a radio on the farm by this time. Janette, age 15, was living at home and attending school.  Moses had a hired man to help around the farm: John Heward, 66, boarded with the family.

Moses’ brother David Lewis Clark, 59, and his wife, Myra Hibbard, 55, were living on a farm nearby. Myra worked as a school teacher in the Wilton Public Schools.  A nephew, Maurice T. Sullivan, 30, boarded with them and worked with David on the farm.

In 1930, William John and Nellie Clark were living in Waltham, Massachusetts.

RESEARCHER NOTE:  My understanding is that there were three Clark farms on Walker Hill Road. Moses’ dairy farm was on the back side of Walker Hill, with a view toward East Dixfield. The second farm, also eventually owned by Moses, was occupied in later years by Janette and her husband, Theredon Lidstone. A third farm, at the base of the hill on the approach from Wilton, was the farm which I think was owned by David Lewis Clark, and where Myra Hibbard Clark remained in her later years. Again, a visit to the county clerk’s office will answer the question of which Clark owned which property at what times….
